The Main Shrine

The Heart of Chechnya is Grozny's foremost mosque and its main shrine. It opened in 2008 and became a symbol of the spirituality and unity of the Muslim people. The Heart of Chechnya is one of the largest mosques in Russia. It has become a symbol of peaceful life, of the revival of the Chechen Republic, and of the striving for peace.

The Architecture

It was built in the Ottoman style, modeled on the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Turkish craftsmen were invited to build and paint it. The walls are faced with travertine marble.

The mosque's minarets* are among the tallest in southern Russia. They are 63 meters (207 feet) high, and the number is no accident: the Prophet Muhammad lived exactly 63 years. Inside is a spacious prayer hall that can hold up to 10,000 worshippers. Its ceilings are painted with ayahs** from the Quran, gilded with the purest gold. Another feature of the halls is their 36 chandeliers, which depict the three main shrines of Islam: 27 of them resemble the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, eight the Prophet's Mosque (with the Rawdah) in Medina, and one large chandelier is modeled on the Kaaba in Mecca.

_*Minarets_ are towers from which the call to prayer is made. _**An ayah_ is a “verse” of the Quran.

Cultural Significance

The Heart of Chechnya is not only a place of worship but also a center of cultural and spiritual development. Muslim services are held and prayers are read here, along with religious events and exhibitions that promote the education and spiritual growth of believers. The grounds also have a large park with fountains for walking and relaxing.
