Our pilgrimage route takes you to 10 holy sites, from majestic monasteries with centuries of history to small churches and healing springs in the homeland of Ilya Muromets. You'll venerate the relics of Peter and Fevronia, the chief patron saints of the family, and see the only crypt of a wonderworking saint in Russia.

Historical Background

The Resurrection Convent stands on Fruit Hill, a picturesque hill on the outskirts of Murom. It has been known since the 16th century, but it flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries. According to legend, this was the site of the country palace of the holy Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia, where they spent the summer months. The convent is modest and quiet, free of tourist crowds: a true corner of prayerful peace.

Architecture and Shrines

The main church is the Resurrection Cathedral, built in the 18th century in the Naryshkin Baroque style. Next to it are a tent-roofed bell tower and a refectory church. The main shrine is a venerated copy of the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow.” Below, at the foot of the hill right by the convent walls, is a spring consecrated in honor of Sts. Peter and Fevronia. A bathhouse with two sections (for men and women) and changing rooms has been built over the spring.

Myths and Legends

Legend has it that the holy spring began to flow where Peter and Fevronia loved to sit on a bench looking out at the Oka. Before their blessed repose they supposedly prayed: “Lord, grant this water healing power for all who seek family counsel and blessing.” Ever since, immersing yourself three times in this font is believed to strengthen a marriage and help childless couples have children.

Today

This is an active convent. Services in the Resurrection Cathedral are held on Sundays. The spring is well maintained: the font is covered, and the water stays at about 4°C (39°F) all year round. Nearby is a small chapel where you can light candles. In summer it gets crowded, especially on the feast day of Peter and Fevronia (July 8). A convent guesthouse is open to pilgrims (advance arrangement required).
