Murom is one of Russia's oldest cities, as old as Kyiv, where Christianity took root as early as the 11th century thanks to missionary princes. Our pilgrimage route takes you to 10 holy sites, from majestic monasteries with centuries of history to small churches and healing springs in the homeland of Ilya Muromets. You'll venerate the relics of Peter and Fevronia, the chief patron saints of the family, and see the only crypt of a wonderworking saint in Russia.

Trinity Church and Ilya Muromets Spring

Historical Background

The Trinity Church stands in the same village of Karacharovo as the Church of St. Elijah, but closer to the bluff above the Oka. It was built in 1805 with funds from the parishioners. This place is considered the “little homeland” of Ilya Muromets: according to the byliny (epic songs), the future bogatyr was born here and lived here until the age of 30, when wandering pilgrims gave him his strength. Next to the church is a holy spring consecrated in honor of Ilya Muromets.

Architecture and Shrines

The church is a Neoclassical building with a rotunda (a round drum with windows) and a bell tower. Inside, fragments of 19th-century murals have survived. The main shrine is an old icon of the Holy Trinity with scenes from the saints' lives, one of which depicts Ilya Muromets in monastic robes. By the church walls stands a memorial in the form of a bogatyr's sword thrust into the ground.

Myths and Legends

The main legend concerns the spring. They say that when Ilya Muromets was leaving for service in Kyiv, his horse struck the ground with its hoof, and a spring gushed from that spot. Ever since, the water in the spring has been considered “bogatyr water”: whoever drinks it gains strength, and whoever washes in it grows healthier. The spring is especially popular with athletes and military personnel who come from Murom and Nizhny Novgorod.

Today

The church is active, with services on Sundays. The spring is well maintained: a chapel has been built over it, and there is a font (separate for men and women). The font stays open in winter, since the water doesn't freeze. Nearby are a small gazebo and tables for tea. On weekdays it's uncrowded and very peaceful here.
