Historical Background
A famous trade route from Georgia to the Caspian steppes once ran across the Caucasus Mountains through the Argun Gorge. In the Middle Ages the gorge was densely populated. Dozens of historical monuments have survived to this day in varying condition. Among them are the Ushkaloy twin towers, which in the 12th century served as a kind of checkpoint between the plains and mountainous Chechnya.
