This route takes you through the calling card of the Chechen Republic, the Argun Gorge, with its amazing nature and man-made monuments. Susanin advises: • Be sure to bring your passport. A border zone begins beyond the village of Itum-Kali. • Check the weather forecast. It can be very windy in the mountains even on a sunny day. • Bring any medicines you may need. If you have high blood pressure, note that you should only come down from the mountains once your blood pressure is back to normal. • Bring an empty bottle. There are many springs with clean, delicious water along the way.

Battle Tower

🕵️ Urban legend • 📜 Historic site

Historical Background

The tower stands on the left bank of the Chanty-Argun River, opposite the village of Shatoy. It was built around the 14th–16th centuries. Originally there were two towers, but only one has survived. It is a unique example of a medieval defensive structure.

Myths and Legends

According to legend, the towers were built by two brothers. The elder lived in the lower one and the younger in the upper. The elder married a beautiful captive with whom the younger was hopelessly in love. This led to a quarrel that ended in tragedy: the younger brother shot an arrow at his rival, and the widowed girl met her death in the waters of the Argun. But this is only a legend: researchers have shown that the towers were not suited for living in.

Today

The tower is a cultural heritage site of Russia. It's a great spot for photos: you can see the tower from the road or drive closer and look inside.
