The town of Yefremov is closely tied to Ivan Bunin, the first Russian Nobel laureate in literature. You'll see old houses that remember the writer and wander through the town grove where Bunin read his poems more than a hundred years ago.

Historical Background

Bunin Park in Yefremov is fairly young: work on it began in 2013. Before that the site was occupied by fruit and berry orchards that had been abandoned for many years. Earlier still, a racecourse was built here for breeding and testing Oryol trotters. With the funds allocated, a fine three-story wooden grandstand for a hundred spectators was built. Its front was very handsome, with balconies, a post with a bell, sofas and boxes, all topped by a semicircular roof. The longtime resident A. F. Dagaev recalled the wooden grandstand and the racetrack: the stroke of a gong announced the start of the races, the crowd shouted and whistled, and wealthy men placed big bets on the horses on the spot — it was real gambling, with winners and losers. The best rider of the time, he said, was a certain Lyapin, who almost never lost. The racecourse closed in 1924. Today the park has plenty of places for fun and relaxation: a playground, rides, a street workout area and a sports complex. To improve the grounds, roll-out lawn was laid, benches, trash bins and bike racks were installed, footpaths were made and trees were planted along some of the alleys.

Monument to I. A. Bunin

The park's main attraction, in its center, is a monument to Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin, unveiled in 2015. It was made by the Moscow sculptor Vitaly Kazansky, a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. The sculpture is one and a half times life size and weighs about two tons. It shows Bunin sitting on a bench, as if surveying the wide expanses of Russian nature, with maple leaves scattered around the bench. Next to him on the bench is a female figure — the writer's muse. The monument stands in the very center of the park, from which the alleys radiate in all directions.
