The town of Yefremov is closely tied to Ivan Bunin, the first Russian Nobel laureate in literature. You'll see old houses that remember the writer and wander through the town grove where Bunin read his poems more than a hundred years ago.

Historical Background

In the 17th century a fortress was built on what was then the Ofremov hillfort, and along with the town a monastery was built: the Transfiguration Hermitage. The heart of the monastery lay in the Ofremov forest. Its entrance looked like a low tower with fortress gates. An arched opening led into the inner courtyard, enclosed by a high palisade and a rampart. In the middle of the courtyard stood a church, with the monks' cells on either side and a small orchard on the left. A cemetery was laid out behind the monastery. None of it can be seen today: nothing remains of the monastery buildings or the church.

The Bunin Graves

About twenty meters from the former church are three graves connected with Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin: those of his brother Evgeny Alekseyevich, his brother's wife Anastasia Karlovna and his mother Lyudmila Alexandrovna. In the old cemetery grows an oak that is the only living thing as old as Yefremov itself; the first peals of the town's alarm bell once rang out above it. Not far from this giant oak grows its companion, also more than 300 years old.
