History

Construction of the post office at 3 Königsberger Strasse began in 1894, and two years later the building was ready for use. In the middle of an oval niche was a black eagle, the coat of arms of East Prussia. On the wall below a second-floor window was the inscription “KAISERLICHES POSTAMT,” meaning “Imperial Post Office.”

Architecture

The building is in the Historicist style and built of red brick. On the facades you can spot Gothic Revival elements such as pointed niches and arched windows. The center of the building and the side facades have projecting sections (risalits) topped with stepped gables. The walls are decorated with dark brown brick laid in strict geometric patterns, and the stepped windowsills are finished with green glazed tiles. A semicircular tower in the post office's inner courtyard once had a tall spire.

Story

From the mid-1930s, all mail passing through the post office was canceled not with an ordinary stamp, as before, but with a special one showing an elk. The coat of arms of Cranz featured this handsome forest animal and a fish, but no one knows for sure why the postmark ended up showing just the elk's head. Several postcards with this postmark are held in the collection of the Zelenogradsk Local History Museum, along with postcards sent from the resort town of Cranz to all corners of the world.
