Historical Background

This was one of the first buildings here and was probably among the most comfortable places to stay at the time. The guesthouse was owned by Gustav Stark, whose name can be seen in old photographs. Over the years the guesthouse changed owners and names. Later it was called “Flunder” (German for “flounder”).

Architecture

The three-story building originally had a flat roof and small balconies at the second-floor level. Wooden verandas were added on the facade facing the main street. The guesthouse occupied the upper floors.

Story

The ground floor housed what was probably the oldest tobacco shop in Cranz. The “Sigaretten” sign above the front door stayed the same year after year. Shops like this sold tobacco, cigarette cases, smoking accessories, pipes, cigarette holders and so on. In Soviet times there was a barbershop here; today the ground floor is home to the civil registry office.
