Historical Background
The monument was created in memory of fellow villagers who died in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. Its location is symbolic: it greets everyone entering the village, reminding them of the need to preserve the memory of the heroes. The monument has become an important part of the village's appearance and of patriotic education. During the war, Sikachi-Alyan, like the whole country, went through hard times. Hundreds of villagers went to the front to defend their homeland. Draft boards worked under intense pressure, sending young and middle-aged men to the front lines, men who were ready to give their lives for their country's freedom. Many of them never came home. Old-timers remember how the conscripts were seen off. The whole village would gather at the station to say goodbye to their relatives and loved ones. Women and children wept, and old people made the sign of the cross over those going off to battle. Every family kept the memory of those who did not return from the war.
