Where Chekhov Practiced

Before you is the former Novo-Yekaterininskaya Hospital, where Chekhov honed his skills as a doctor. In 1883–1884 the future classic spent sleepless nights here, combining practice in the therapeutic, surgical and neurological clinics with grueling preparation for his final exams. “I'm terribly sleepy,” he wrote to friends, coming home from here at three in the morning. Even then his professors noticed Anton Pavlovich's distinctive manner: he didn't just treat illnesses but talked at length with patients about what troubled them. Chekhov was among the first to put into practice the conviction that physical health is inseparable from a person's emotional state, showing the very sensitivity that would later give depth to his great literature.
