What Does the City's Name Mean?
Our Kolobok is surrounded by trees and shrubs. Before us is a beautiful view of the Volga and the slope where there have always been many orchards. Perhaps that is why Simbirsk is translated from various languages as “white mountain” or “green mountain.” In spring, when the trees blossomed, the city really did don a white cap, and in summer it dressed in green.
Simbirsk Pastila
Simbirsk apples were as famous as Tula gingerbread or Astrakhan watermelons. In 1824 Alexander I was given an apple tree in Simbirsk, which gave its name to the well-known variety “Emperor Alexander.” The apples were sent to Siberia, and in Soviet times to France. Simbirsk pastila (fruit paste) was not just a dessert but was also used in industry.
A Russian Classic and His Granddaughter
Sergei Timofeyevich Aksakov, a recognized Russian classic, adored nature. He is known for his books about hunting and fishing and for the fairy tale “The Scarlet Flower.” Aksakov was born in 1791 in Ufa, which in those days was joined with Simbirsk in a single Ufa and Simbirsk Governor-Generalship. As a child, little Seryozha Aksakov often visited the Aksakov family estates in Simbirsk Governorate, and his books preserve the memory of those visits. The writer's beloved granddaughter Olenka, Olga Grigoryevna, was born in Simbirsk; he dedicated his famous fairy tale to her, and it is sometimes called “Olenka's Flower” (a play on alenky, “scarlet”). The prototype of the scarlet flower is thought to have been a rare member of the Simbirsk flora, the fern-leaf or wild peony, which blooms bright scarlet in the steppe in May. The Wild Peony festival is held every year in Ulyanovsk Region. You can find information about it via the QR code by our Kolobok.
Kolobok Olenka
If you look closely at the figure of Olenka, you'll notice a little envelope in her hands with a heart drawn on it, the symbol of love. A belief has arisen that if a young man dreams of love, he should rub the envelope with the heart on Kolobok Olenka, and then he will surely meet his beloved.
Next Stop
Where should the quest take you next? Olenka is gazing toward another Kolobok nearby, the Hussar. And that's no coincidence, since the Hussar also has an envelope and is waiting for news from his beloved. Between these two Koloboks, on Lovers' Square, stands the sculptural composition “Meeting Under the Clock.” Together the three sculptures form a romantic triangle. Don't forget to switch on your imagination and feel the full magic of these sculptures.
