Hi! I'm Kolobok, a little round bun made of wheat flour. According to Vladimir Dahl's dictionary, I come from Simbirsk, because this is where they baked a round bread called kolebyatka. I know the most interesting places in town, and I'm opening a tourist quest in which I'll tell you about the famous people and sights of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk. “Kolobok's Tourist Quest in Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk” was created by the Ulyanovsk city administration team under the municipal program “Tourism Development in the Municipality of the City of Ulyanovsk.”

Poet of Joy and Revelry

Nikolai Mikhailovich Yazykov, a native of Simbirsk, was born in 1803. A poet of joy and intoxication, of revelry and freedom, he was one of the most gifted writers of the Golden Age of Russian literature. Pushkin called him a “rock” and foretold great fame for him. Gogol considered his “Earthquake” the best poem in the Russian language. And how beautifully Nikolai Yazykov wrote about nature!

“Earthquake”

* Upon the city of Constantine * The Lord Most High once sent a quake, * And the deep waters of the Hellespont * And the shore, with its heaps of peaks and crags, * All trembled, and the halls of kings, * The temple, circus, hippodrome, * The jagged battlements of the city walls, * And all the seaboard round about.

“Spring”

* A glorious day! On the soft green grass * I lie: not one small cloud in all the sky's blue! * The green meadow blooms; the purest mountain air, * With sweet coolness and life-giving languor, * Streams into my breast, and I am full of spring! * And here its singer flies above me, * And merry sounds go flying over me! * And those sounds sing a wondrous feeling * Into my soul. Unwittingly I yield to a magic * Oblivion; unwittingly I close my eyes: * I feel light, so light, as if I were flying, * Flying and singing, flying and singing!

Pushkin in Simbirsk Governorate

In 1833, setting off for Orenburg to gather material on the Pugachev Rebellion, Pushkin wanted to visit his friend Yazykov, who had traded noisy high society for the beauties of the Simbirsk region. On the way the poet stopped in Simbirsk and then at the estate. There Alexander Sergeyevich was given a room on the ground floor, where, according to legend, he left his autograph on the windowpane with a diamond ring. But the friends met only on his return journey, and for many years the guest room in the Yazykov house was called the Pushkin Room. Alexander Sergeyevich spent about a week in Simbirsk Governorate as a welcome guest of his friends, the Simbirsk nobles the Yurlovs, Yazykovs, and Khomyakovs and General Pyotr Ivashev. Dinner parties were held in the poet's honor, and even a ball at the house of Governor Zagryazhsky, a cousin of the father of Pushkin's wife, Natalia Nikolaevna. Later the governor's daughter, Lizonka Zagryazhskaya, became the wife of Pushkin's younger brother, Lev Sergeyevich.

The Literary Museum

The Yazykov House literary museum is located in one of the oldest buildings in Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk, which belonged to the family of the poet Nikolai Yazykov. In 2005 a memorial bust of Pushkin by Zurab Tsereteli, a People's Artist of the USSR, was installed beside the house. You can learn much more via the QR code by our wonderful Kolobok.

Kolobok with a Keepsake Ring

Now take a close look at our hero. On his hat you'll see two symbols: a large letter T and a ring. What do they tell us? The story of the Simbirsk poet's love for an actress named Tatiana, whom he met at the wedding of his friend Alexander Pushkin. It was a vivid but dramatic love story. As a keepsake of this feeling, Yazykov kept his beloved's ring. This figure is the patron of all creative people. Rub the quill and inspiration will come to you. And if you want luck in love, rub the ring, and all your cherished dreams of happiness will surely come true. The quill points us toward the Volga and the next Kolobok, who tells about Dmitry Sadovnikov. [Additional Materials](https://ulyanovsk.travel/kol06.php)
