Historical Background
The first fortifications on the site of the present fortress were built in the 9th and 12th centuries, but the Staraya Ladoga fortress acquired its present appearance only by the 16th century. The last military event in which its walls took part was the Great Northern War of 1700–1721. After it the fortress was abandoned as a military site. Only in the 1960s did the Soviet authorities begin restoring the monument, and in 1971 a museum-reserve of history, architecture, and archaeology opened on the grounds of the Staraya Ladoga fortress.
