An ancient capital and an important town until the 18th century. Gradually Staraya Ladoga lost its status and became a village, an open-air monument to history. An ancient fortress and monasteries of the 12th–16th centuries survive here. They stand along the left bank of the Volkhov River, and the best views of them open from the right bank. The route was designed especially for the BelkaCar car-sharing service.

A system of burial mounds in the southern part of the village. The first archaeological excavations here were carried out by N. E. Brandenburg in 1878–1884, and in 1895 he published a major scholarly work, “The Kurgans of the Southern Ladoga Area.” The largest mound of the Pobedishche tract was about 4 meters (13 feet) high. The finds made it possible to date these burials to the 8th century.
