An ancient capital and an important town until the 18th century. Gradually Staraya Ladoga lost its status and became a village, an open-air monument to history. An ancient fortress and monasteries of the 12th–16th centuries survive here. They stand along the left bank of the Volkhov River, and the best views of them open from the right bank. The route was designed especially for the BelkaCar car-sharing service.

In 2012 a competition was announced among sculptors and architects, and 38 entrants submitted proposals. After long discussions the competition commission and the expert council chose the design by the St. Petersburg sculptor Oleg Shorov. The monument stands on a 40-metric-ton (44-short-ton) stone pedestal brought specially from Kamennogorsk. The monument is 7 meters (23 feet) high. It was unveiled in 2015.
