One of the oldest cities of Rus. The cradle of Russian democracy, a medieval center of trade and crafts, and a major partner of the Hanseatic League in the 12th–17th centuries. Veliky Novgorod was the link between medieval Europe and Rus. Today Veliky Novgorod is an open-air museum. This route was designed specially for the BelkaCar car-sharing service.

Millennium of Russia Monument

🗿 Monument

Historical Background

The monument was unveiled in 1862 in the Novgorod Kremlin. It marked the thousandth anniversary of the calling of the Varangians — the event traditionally seen as the beginning of Russian statehood. It was designed by Mikhail Mikeshin, together with the sculptor Ivan Schroeder and the architect Viktor Hartmann. The central idea of the monument was to portray the key stages and heroes of Russian history.

Today

The monument has three tiers representing different periods of Russia's development. The top tier is crowned by an angel and an allegorical figure of Russia. The middle tier shows six eras, from the calling of Rurik to the reign of Peter I. The lower tier features 109 figures of outstanding people, among them Alexander Nevsky, Lomonosov, Pushkin and Suvorov. The monument is surrounded by lamps and a decorative railing restored after the war.

An Interesting Detail

Ivan the Terrible was left out of the monument: Novgorod has no love for him because of the bloody massacre he carried out in the city in 1570. His grandfather Ivan III is there, though. Curiously, it was Ivan III who ended Novgorod's independence and annexed it to Moscow in 1478.
