Historical Background
The Church of the Savior on Nereditsa was built in 1198 by Prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich in memory of his sons who had died. It is a single-domed, cube-shaped church whose frescoes once covered every surface of the walls, pillars and vaults. These murals, painted by a team of Novgorod artists, were among the church's greatest artistic treasures. The church was destroyed during World War II, but much of the walls and small fragments of the paintings survived. Rebuilding began in 1944 and continued until 1958, including the restoration and conservation of the surviving fragments.
