Historical Background
St. Anthony's Monastery was founded in 1106 by St. Anthony the Roman who, according to legend, arrived in Novgorod on a rock that had broken away from the shore in Italy. The monastery's main church was the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God, completed in 1119. The monastery played an important role in Novgorod's spiritual life, rivaling the Yuriev Monastery. At various times it housed a theological seminary and the residence of the Novgorod bishops.
