Historical Background

The Novgorod Kremlin, known as the Detinets, is one of the oldest and most important fortresses of medieval Rus. The first fortifications on this site date back to the 10th century, and the stone walls began to go up in the 14th–15th centuries. Under Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich the Kremlin became the administrative and spiritual center of the Novgorod Republic, and from the 15th century it was an important outpost of the Moscow principality.

Today

Nine of the Kremlin's twelve towers survive, each with its own unique architecture and history. The Kremlin also contains St. Sophia Cathedral, the Millennium of Russia monument and the Archbishop's Chamber. Today it is home to the Novgorod Museum-Reserve and hosts cultural and educational events. As part of the historic center of Veliky Novgorod, the Detinets is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Myths and Legends

Local legends say there are underground passages beneath the Kremlin that may have been used for secret communication between the city's key sites.
