Rybinsk Railway Station

🚂 Railway station

Historical Background

The railroad came to Rybinsk in 1870, when a wooden station was built, and it had a major impact on the town's growth as an important trade and transshipment point. The old wooden building burned down in 1903 in yet another town fire. In 1905 a new brick building went up to a design by S. I. Minash in the Art Nouveau style popular at the time.

Importance for the Town

For a long time Rybinsk remained the most important water transshipment point on the way from the Lower Volga north to St. Petersburg. With the opening in 1870 of the railroad linking Rybinsk to the Nikolaevskaya line between Moscow and St. Petersburg, and later to the Latvian town of Windau (now Ventspils), Rybinsk further cemented its status as a major trading center on the route from the Baltic to the Volga lands.

A Center of Social Life

From the moment it opened in 1905, the Rybinsk station became the center of the town's social life. Besides its direct purpose of receiving and dispatching goods and passengers, its restaurant hosted banquets, the station building held balls, concerts, and soirées, and a public garden was laid out on the station square. You could say the station thus lived up to the original meaning of the Russian word vokzal: “a place of public amusement.”

The Station Today

In Soviet times some of the station's interiors were lost, but in our day the building has been restored from surviving photographs.
