Historical Background

On the town embankment, not far from the Volga crossing, stands the Chapel of St. Nicholas, built in 1866–1867 in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. St. Nicholas is the patron of travelers and merchants, which suits Rybinsk's merchant spirit. The chapel was built with money from the merchant I. I. Eltekov to commemorate Tsar Alexander II's escape from an assassination attempt in 1866.

Architecture

The chapel is decorated with floral ornament, and stucco cherub heads are placed beneath the windows. The arches hold images of saints, and the walls are painted white and adorned with colored stucco.

The Chapel's Fate After the October Revolution

The chapel was closed in the fall of 1926, when the Soviet authorities launched their campaign against religion. The building was altered: a second story was added and the first floor was replanned. Until 2010 it housed first the river port library and then the water police. In 2011 the chapel was reconstructed, restoring its former splendor.
