Trading Rows

Historical Background

Opposite the fire tower stands a whole ensemble of trading rows. They were built in the late 18th century, when Kostroma was an important trading town. Back then furs, baked goods, tobacco and fish were sold here. The Red Rows and the Large Flour Rows were built first, followed by the Gingerbread, Fish, Vegetable, Kvass, Meat and other rows.

The Site's Role

The idea behind the trading rows was that each type of goods had its own row. All the shops (one shop per arch) followed a standard plan: a storage cellar, a ground floor for trading and a second floor for an office. Most of the rows' names are still clear today, but the Red Rows puzzle visitors most. Back then, “red goods” meant leather, furs and fabrics. Today the Trading Rows are still used for their original purpose: they house shops, cafés and museums, and there's a market inside the Large Flour Rows.

Church of the Savior in the Rows

Within the rows stands a church with an unusual history. Most buildings in the center were wooden and regularly burned down and were rebuilt. A small wooden church stood here in the town center, and in 1766 a stone church was built in its place. When it was decided to build the brick Trading Rows, the church was kept, so the Church of the Savior ended up as part of the Trading Rows ensemble.
