Historical Background

This is the heart of the historic center. Locals call the square “the frying pan,” since from above it resembles one. It was originally called Yekaterinoslavskaya Square and in 1835 was renamed Susaninskaya in honor of the legendary local man. Streets radiate from the square in different directions, the result of planned development.

The Town Plan

Until the 18th century this was a craftsmen's quarter, which burned down in a fire. After that it was decided to lay out a proper square. There are two versions of how the square took shape, a practical one and a romantic one. According to the practical version, it was done so that firefighters could quickly reach any part of town. According to the romantic version, Catherine the Great dropped her fan while approving the town plan, which made the architect change the ensemble's concept. The town's main streets radiate from the square, and each begins with a beautiful historic building.

Susanin Monument

Here on the square you can also see the monument to Ivan Susanin in its newer version. The original monument was erected in 1851 in honor of his legendary deed during the Time of Troubles. It was destroyed after the revolution, and in 1967 a new, larger monument was put up, although discussions about restoring it had begun as early as 1947.
