Historical Background

In October 1941 Ostashevo was occupied by Nazi troops. But even before that, partisan units had been formed in the village, and they kept fighting until the Red Army arrived. The volunteer fighter battalion was led by the head of the local school.

About the Sculpture

Sculptor: D. V. Kalinin Architect: V. V. Kalinin The 1972 monument shows a composite image of teenage partisans. Even so, you can recognize students of the Ostashevo school in the figures: Tolya Shumov, Volodya Kolyadov and 20-year-old Shura Voronova. Their fates are closely intertwined.

Shura Voronova, 20

Shura knew the area well and became a partisan scout, gathering information about enemy troops. Sadly, she was betrayed to the Germans by a local collaborator policeman, Kirillin. Shura was captured and brutally tortured, but she did not give away her comrades. She was posthumously awarded the Medal for Battle Merit.

Tolya Shumov, 17

Around that time Tolya Shumov was supposed to meet Shura on an assignment, but she never showed up. While he was searching for her, the policeman Kirillin spotted Tolya. Kirillin repeated his “success” and handed the boy over to the Nazis. After torturing him and getting nothing, the Germans shot Tolya. The young pioneer was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin.

Volodya Kolyadov, 15

The scout Volodya was Tolya Shumov's schoolmate. He died just a month after his friend. In January 1942 the Red Army was already approaching the Ostashevo district, and reconnaissance of enemy positions was urgently needed. Volodya revealed their location by firing a flare. That's how he was spotted and killed. The boy was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
