Historical Background

In 1813 the estate was inherited from A. V. Urusov by his stepson N. N. Muravyov, father of the future Decembrist Alexander Muravyov. When Alexander inherited Ostashevo, the estate's most unusual building went up: a stable yard in the Gothic Revival style. The clock tower was probably built as a fire watchtower: from up high you could quickly see where a fire was and how big it was.

Architectural Features

The architect is unknown. The building is L-shaped, with two single-story wings and a multi-tier entrance tower with a clock. Unfortunately, the current clock is just painted on — the old one has been lost. Locals have nicknamed the building “Big Ben”. The tower used to be topped with a spire, which has also been lost.

Myths and Legends

A lot in Ostashevo is connected with the Decembrist movement. Here is a legend about the fire watchtower, or stable yard: Alexander Muravyov founded and led the first secret society, the Union of Salvation, and called for abolishing serfdom and drawing up a constitution. A couple of weeks after the Decembrist uprising, A. N. Muravyov was arrested for organizing it, even though he had left the secret society shortly before. His father Nikolai thought his son had been executed and, legend has it, ordered the tower clock stopped at the time of the execution. It later turned out that his son had only been arrested, but the clock was never restarted. It's just a pretty legend, though: at the time of the arrest the stable yard and the tower did not yet exist.

Today

A hundred years on, there is still a fire station here, although the watchtower is now purely decorative. “Big Ben” was restored not long ago, and the facade color turned out… interesting.
