In 1942 fierce battles were fought at Ostashevo during the counteroffensive at Moscow, and 617 soldiers were killed. They are buried in a mass grave.
In 1958 a monument of a Soviet soldier with a submachine gun was erected at the burial site. Around it are plaques with the names of those who could be identified. The monument was restored in 2018. The choice of gold paint is curious, to say the least. Still, the grounds were tidied up, and the sculpture is no longer in a dangerous state.
Not all the soldiers buried during World War II have been identified. Many families still don't know where and how their relatives died in the war. If you know the surname and date of birth of someone who fought in the war, you can try searching for them on the Pamyat Naroda (Memory of the People) portal.
