Historical Background

The steam locomotive Eu 708-64 stands at Volkhovstroy-1 station. Today it is a monument to the heroism of railway workers. Fierce battles of World War II were fought around Volkhov; it was here that the Germans failed to close a second ring of the siege around Leningrad. As for Eu 708-64, it made history: in February 1943 this was the first locomotive to bring a train of ammunition and food to Leningrad's Finland Station after the siege was broken.
