History of the Estate

This merchant house on Posadskaya Street was built in 1799 and became one of the notable buildings of the Kolomna posad (merchant quarter). From 1861 the estate belonged to the Suranov dynasty, a well-known merchant family that played an important role in town life in the 18th and 19th centuries. The house and outbuildings remained theirs until the end of the century.

A Merchant Legacy

The Suranovs represent the trading class that formed the backbone of Kolomna's economy. The house reflected their status: its decoration, interiors and household objects give a sense of the wealth and way of life of 19th-century town merchants. Following the European tradition of the time, such estates could open to travelers, letting them see domestic life and the house's arrangement from the inside.

Restoration and Revival

By 2022 the building was in a dilapidated state, and a major restoration began. Experts in history and culture re-created the atmosphere of 19th-century merchant life: furniture, furnishings and even characters' costumes sewn from patterns in fashion magazines of the time.

The House Museum Today

In 2023 the Suranov estate reopened to the public. Visitors can see the restored interiors of the merchant house and learn about its owners and the life of Kolomna merchants 150 years ago. Today the house is a regional cultural heritage site and part of the town's museum landscape, preserving the memory of 19th-century merchant Kolomna. What's more, guests are now offered various ways to immerse themselves in 19th-century life, even staying here for a little over a day, 30 hours in all.
