Historical Background

Stachki (Strike) Street is one of the most important historic places in Orekhovo-Zuevo. It was here, in January 1885, that the Morozov Strike took place, one of the largest workers' protests in the Russian Empire. More than eight thousand weavers at the Nikolskaya Manufactory walked off the job, demanding higher wages, fewer fines, and better working conditions.

The Strike

The spark for the protest was the decision by the mill's owner, Timofey Morozov, to make January 7, still part of the Epiphany holidays, a working day. The unrest lasted ten days and ended with the arrest of its participants, yet it was precisely after these events that the government for the first time passed laws regulating fines and hiring at factories. The Morozov Strike became a landmark moment in the history of the Russian labor movement.

About the Place

The Strike Courtyard is the center of the town's historic quarter. Before the revolution it was home to the office of the Nikolskaya Manufactory, where the mill's business and management affairs were handled. Nearby stood warehouses, shops, and guest rooms for visitors. Of the industrial buildings, the bakery survives; today it is the Orekhovokhleb bread factory. In 1923 an obelisk to the Fighters of the Revolution was erected in the courtyard, one of the first monuments in Orekhovo-Zuevo. Ever since, the place has remained a symbol of remembrance for the workers who changed life in this factory town. The atmosphere of the neighborhood is like a set for a historical film, perfect for a stroll or for photos against the old facades.
