Historical Background
The mansion of mill manager Stepan Nikiforovich Sveshnikov stands deep inside a former garden on Nikolskaya Street. The house rests on a stone foundation; some of its rooms had oak parquet floors, and from the terraces one could step down into the garden. The building became a fine example of late 19th-century wooden architecture, its facade adorned with intricate carving. After the revolution the estate housed the city hospital. The grounds, known as the Hospital Yard, held residential houses and buildings called barracks. They were home to hospital staff as well as other employees of the manufactory, including managers.
