Historical Background

The monument was unveiled in 1987 for the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth. It was created by the sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov, who was awarded the I. E. Repin State Prize for this work. The monument is a cultural heritage site of regional significance.

A Single Memorial

The composition tells a whole story. The poet is shown in a military uniform and cavalry boots — after all, he fought in the Patriotic War of 1812, risked his life more than once and earned decorations. He holds a scroll, as if about to read his verses. Beside him stands a war horse with its head bowed: this is how the sculptor showed that Batyushkov gave up a military career for poetry. On the left, on a separate pedestal, sits a peasant girl with a pipe — his Muse, the embodiment of the folk inspiration from which the poet drew strength. On the right rises Pallas Athena with a helmet and shield: she recalls Batyushkov's brave, martial poetry, while her lowered shield seems to speak of the bitter insights he gained through hardship. The pedestal bears a laconic inscription: “To K. Batyushkov from grateful descendants.”
