Historical Background
During his visit to Vologda in 1566, Tsar Ivan the Terrible started the building of stone fortifications around the city. Symbolically, they were founded on April 28, the feast day of the Holy Apostles Jason and Sosipater. To commemorate this, the townspeople later replaced an old 16th-century wooden church with a new stone one dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan, consecrating one of its side chapels to these apostles. Local residents built the church southwest of St. Sophia Cathedral, on what used to be the market square. It was founded in memory of the start of the great construction of the Vologda Kremlin and the city's stone walls.
