Historical Background
Vologda's oldest stone building is St. Sophia Cathedral, built in 1568–1570 by decree of Ivan the Terrible. It was modeled on the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, but with a feature unique in Orthodoxy: the altar faces north, toward the Vologda River, so that it faces the city's ceremonial entrance. According to the legend of the brick at St. Sophia Cathedral, while the tsar was inspecting the church under construction, a piece of plinthite (an old-style flat brick) fell on his head. Furious and frightened, the tsar ordered work on his grand northern capital to stop, hastily left Vologda and never returned.
