Historical Background
St. Gerasim of Vologda was a monk of the Russian Church. He founded the Trinity Monastery on Kaisarov Creek, and church tradition also credits him with founding the city of Vologda. Gerasim left Kyiv and set off for the north of Rus as a missionary. Reaching the Vologda River, he settled on the high bank by Kaisarov Creek, where he built himself a cell and founded the Trinity-Gerasimov Monastery. The city of Vologda later grew up around the monastery, which is why 1147 is considered the year of its founding.
