Shlisselburg is an old town 50 kilometers (31 miles) from St. Petersburg. Its name means “key town,” and it has stood here for more than 700 years. That's reason enough to visit and see with your own eyes the “Russian Bastille” of Peter the Great's era, centuries-old canals, and a stunning sunset over the Neva. Historical Background

The monument to Peter I in Shlisselburg appeared in 1957. It was the first monument in the USSR dedicated to the reformer tsar and founder of the Northern Capital. On this spot, in 1719, construction of the Ladoga Canal began in the presence of Tsar Peter the Great. The unveiling of the monument was timed to the 250th anniversary of Leningrad. The sculpture itself is the work of Mark Antokolsky.

The Sculpture

Peter I is shown in uniform, his right hand resting on a cane and his left holding a spyglass: a silhouette everyone knows from the 500-ruble banknote.
