Historical Background
This memorial complex is dedicated to the heroic defense of the citadel during the Great Patriotic War. In 1941 Soviet troops occupied the Oreshek fortress and managed to defend and hold it for 500 days. Thanks to this, the Road of Life could exist, maintaining communication with besieged Leningrad. The memorial opened in 1985. It consists of the ruins of the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist: to preserve the memory of the tragic events, it was decided not to restore the building. By the ruins stands the sculpture “The Oath,” depicting the defenders of the fortress. Nearby you can see a metal sphere with images of war scenes.
