Historical Background

Alexander Pushkin came to Yaropolets in 1833 and 1834, staying at the house of his mother-in-law. Even then the poet called the Goncharov estate a “ruined palace”. Today the building is in better shape, and opposite the main entrance you can see a bust of Pushkin.

How the Sculpture Came About

The project was started by the International Federation of Russian-Speaking Writers. For the poet's 209th birthday it was decided to cast four bronze busts designed by the Moldovan sculptor Leonid Vatnik. The bronze sculptures were installed in Hungary, Poland, Moscow and Yaropolets. At the time there were plans to put up 50 such monuments in different countries, which the initiators believed would help spread and strengthen the Russian language.
