Historical Background
The lake lies next to the village of the same name, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Tikhvin. It is a beautiful spot, convenient for a beach holiday or camping with a tent. The lake is surrounded by coniferous forest.

The name Tikhvin sounds soft and brings to mind something “quiet” (tikhy in Russian), like river water. And that's no accident: translated from a Finno-Ugric language, tikh and vin mean “water” and “way.” On this route you'll learn how life flowed, and sometimes seethed, in this “water” town. The route was designed especially for the BelkaCar car-sharing service.

The name of this place is believed to date from the time of the Russo-Swedish War, when, according to legend, the abbess of the Vvedensky (Presentation) Convent sought refuge here. There are also three versions of why the abbess and her novices hid on the lake shore. According to the first, she was hiding from the wrath of her former husband, Tsar Ivan the Terrible; according to the second, she was fleeing the Time of Troubles. The third says she was escaping the Swedish invaders who plundered and burned the convent. And so the nameless lake became Tsaritsyno (the Tsaritsa's Lake).
