The name Tikhvin sounds soft and brings to mind something “quiet” (tikhy in Russian), like river water. And that's no accident: translated from a Finno-Ugric language, tikh and vin mean “water” and “way.” On this route you'll learn how life flowed, and sometimes seethed, in this “water” town. The route was designed especially for the BelkaCar car-sharing service.

Historical Background

The church was built in 1719 with donations from local merchants. In 1830 it was rebuilt in stone. From 1935 to 1991 the church received no parishioners, since after the revolution it had been closed and ransacked. During the war military equipment was repaired in it, and later it was turned into a mill. Today the church is active again.

Architecture

The church is considered a landmark of classic Orthodox architecture: a large dome topped by a small cupola and a cross, an entrance portico with columns and a triangular pediment, and a three-tier bell tower with a spire.

Legend

There is a story connected with the building of the church. Several Russian merchants, natives of Tikhvin, were in Sweden on business when the Great Northern War broke out, and they were thrown into prison. They remained in captivity until the victory at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, and when they returned home they vowed to build a church as a sign of gratitude.
