Founded by Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky in 1158, the cathedral became the main church of the Vladimir Metropolis and a monument of the white-stone architecture of Rus. The rulers of Vladimir and Moscow were crowned as grand princes here.
The five-domed church was built of white stone by craftsmen invited from the Holy Roman Empire. Its walls are decorated with 300 m² of frescoes by Andrei Rublev, including fragments of the Last Judgment, created in the style and traditions of the 12th century.
The cathedral is both an active church and a museum, and opposite it is a viewpoint with an equestrian monument to Prince Vladimir. Andrei Rublev's icons from the cathedral are now kept in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
