Historical Background

Cathedral Square is home to a monument erected in the mid-20th century for the city's 850th anniversary. Made in the Socialist Realist style, it symbolizes the continuity of the ages. The bas-reliefs on the stele depict memorable events from the city's history.

Architecture

The monument is a stone stele with three bronze figures. A medieval warrior with a sword and an ancient Russian master builder represent the past, while a worker holding a model tractor in his hands represents the present. Each figure faces a key part of the city: the warrior looks toward the Golden Gate, the builder toward the Dormition Cathedral and the worker toward the industrial district in the east.
