Historical Background

One of the city's calling cards. The gate was built on the orders of Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky, whose reign saw both the flowering of white-stone architecture and the rise of Vladimir. It is an old fortification with the Church of the Deposition of the Robe inside. The gate served for defense, but it was also used as a triumphal arch — the main entrance to the part of the city where the princes and boyars lived.

Myths and Legends

The Golden Gate got its name because it was once decorated with gold plates. According to legend, the townspeople took the plates down during the Mongol-Tatar invasion and sank them in the Klyazma River, but they were never found again.

Fun Fact

Through this gate marched the victors of the Battle on the Ice, the heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo, Dmitry Pozharsky's militia regiments and the troops of A. Suvorov.

Today

There is a museum inside the Golden Gate with a diorama of old Vladimir, military uniforms and guns with curved barrels. The museum is currently closed for restoration, so the monument can only be seen from outside. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the city.
