Historical Background

In the 12th century Vladimir was protected by ramparts topped with wooden walls and towers. These fortifications saved the princely capital from enemies more than once, but they could not hold out against the Mongol army of Batu Khan. By the 18th century the city was no longer a fortress, and residents began using the ramparts for vegetable gardens.

Architecture

One of the ramparts was bought by a merchant named Kozlov, and it has been called the Kozlov Rampart ever since. The area around it has been landscaped several times, but only a small section remains well kept.

Worth Knowing

Climb the rampart to photograph the Golden Gate from above or to watch the sunset. With its historic atmosphere and views, the spot still draws locals and tourists alike.
