Bridge over the Istra River

🌉 Bridge

Historical Background

The bridge leads to the New Jerusalem Monastery. The river it crosses is called the Jordan; it is believed that Patriarch Nikon himself renamed it. The river links all the holy sites of New Jerusalem. Next to the bridge is a wooden figure of an elderly couple with a hen, which is truly hilarious.

Myths and Legends

Rumor has it that in the 1960s the Soviet authorities sank the “measure stone” of the Holy Sepulchre to the bottom of the Istra; the stone had supposedly been brought to Russia from Constantinople in the 12th century. Divers searched the riverbed for it, but the muddy bottom apparently kept the Christian relic hidden.

More Facts

In 1935 a reservoir was built on the Istra River, and it still supplies Moscow with drinking water.
