The first thing you'll see on your way to the monastery is its wall. It was built in 1690–1694 to a design by the architect Yakov Bukhvostov, in the shape of an irregular hexagon, and runs for about a kilometer (0.6 miles). Best of all, you can walk along its gallery for free and view the monastery from above.
Five of the eight towers are named after gates in Jerusalem's city walls. The first tower on your way is the House of David. The original Tower of David in Jerusalem got its name from Byzantine Christians, who believed the palace of King David, the founder of Jerusalem, had stood on that spot. It was repeatedly at the center of fighting: in 70 AD the Romans captured it and turned it into barracks; from the 16th century it belonged to the Turks; after World War I, to the British, and so on. The history of the Istra House of David is far less tangled.
The monastery wall follows the traditions of Old Russian fortress architecture. It even has machicolations on a ledge, from which defenders could pour boiling tar on attackers.
