Historical Background
To the right of the monastery entrance, four cannons will be aimed at you, but that's no reason to turn around and run! You're in no danger, except the chance to touch history.
Patriarch Nikon dreamed of recreating Jerusalem's Holy Land near Moscow, complete with Mount Zion, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, an underground church and much more. Follow the route and judge for yourself how well this sacred landscape was transplanted.

The number of guns is no accident: it stands for the number of volleys that turned back the streltsy (musketeers) during their revolt against Peter the Great. The battle took place beneath the monastery walls on July 17, 1698. The tsar's side was led by his close associate General Gordon.
