Historical Background

Nikon himself laid the foundation of this church on the hill called “Zion” in 1656. The large dome bears an inscription about the start of construction. The church is enormous and contains re-creations of places and scenes from the life of Christ.

The Long-Suffering Tent Roof

The tent roof over the Holy Sepulchre is the most striking part of the exterior. Its base is 23 meters (75 ft) across and it is 18 meters (59 ft) high. When it was built, the rotunda's tent roof was a major technical achievement for its time. At the center of the rotunda is the main shrine, the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre.

The Collapse of 1723

In May 1723 the tent roof collapsed. Neither people nor the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre were harmed, but surprisingly the Holy Synod paid no attention for almost seven years. Only in 1730 did soldiers come to clear the rubble. A new tent roof was built in 1756–1759 to a design by the famous architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

The Destruction of 1941

The next destruction was far greater. On December 10, 1941, retreating from Moscow, the Germans blew up the Cathedral of the Resurrection. The tent roof, the bell tower, the gate church and the towers of the wall were destroyed. The destruction of the New Jerusalem Monastery was cited at the Nuremberg trials as a crime against humanity. Restoration work began while the war was still going on.
