Historical Background
The New Jerusalem necropolis is the surviving part of what was once a large cemetery. Members of the Golitsyn, Bestuzhev-Ryumin, Yushkov and other families are buried near the underground church.
Patriarch Nikon dreamed of recreating Jerusalem's Holy Land near Moscow, complete with Mount Zion, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, an underground church and much more. Follow the route and judge for yourself how well this sacred landscape was transplanted.

The New Jerusalem necropolis is the surviving part of what was once a large cemetery. Members of the Golitsyn, Bestuzhev-Ryumin, Yushkov and other families are buried near the underground church.
The most beautiful monument in the necropolis is made of black labradorite. On its front is a mosaic icon of the Most Holy Mother of God, based on sketches by the artist Viktor Vasnetsov. Tserikova was the wife of a factory owner. She was a kind woman who looked after the women working at her husband's factory.
In the 1960s, when the monastery was a museum, the cemetery to the left of the entrance was bulldozed.
