Monument to Siege Water
During the Siege the usual municipal services became unavailable, including running water. The city water utility worked intermittently and gave priority to industry and medical facilities. Leningraders had to fetch water from the Neva and the canals, going out onto the ice in winter. Lines formed at the ice holes, and drawing water was hard: people did it lying down, using ladles or buckets. The water was hauled home on sleds, then filtered and boiled, because the water from the rivers and canals was quite dirty. In 2001 a monument was put up on the Fontanka Embankment. In 2003 it was damaged when a car fell on it, but the monument was soon restored.
